Why Write a Short Story?
The most obvious reason is, of course, to enter our Amazing Story Contest. But beyond the obvious, writing short stories is a great way to learn the craft of writing. For the more advanced writer,
the exercise of the short story keeps the writing muscle in shape. Many writers can write them in one sitting (though not
this writer), and they are quite portable when attending the weekly writer's group--the perfect length for critiquing.
(Try hauling several copies of your novel to the group!) The commitment level is not as high, either. More like
going out on a date with your characters rather than marrying them, as is the case with a novel. Short stories are fun
to write, provide a quick sense of accomplishment for the writer, and are perfect for entering contests.
Did I mention, I know just the right contest?
